Newspapers and the Internet

In today’s World Internet is seen to be the greater generator of news, no matter the source, the veracity or accuracy of them nor the implications arisen.

Internet is The Source –the encyclopaedia we all used to use– and Google, Yahoo, Yandex or Baidu the Professors. There is no more need to go to class, one can learn anything from home, anytime. The only risk, losing focus.

Newspapers have, since the birth of internet, tried to turn onto this new platforms with different degrees of success. Although all of them have made the transition to digital, none of them, or very few, have decided to kill the paper editions.

The paper advertising still brings billions of revenues to newspapers and this is simply the reason why they do not abandon these supports. While digital form is keen on news and headlines, paper and tabloids are still some of the preferred formats for many people that spend their free time enjoying and relaxing while reading.

The World is evolving so quick that one cannot get refreshing news every minute, but internet does it. Do you need a glimpse on sports, or breaking news, or Meteo news? Use Internet! Do you want an article from a reputed lecturer or a critic on a music concert, then take more time and read it.

What I believed has caused the extraordinary progression of internet newspapers and magazines is not only its capacity to get to everyone everywhere in the World but the cost of it. The traditional newspaper industry is exorbitantly expensive when compared to digital one, especially if you’re going into print.

People want to get informed whenever they want and wherever they are, and in their own language, something that is not always affordable with print newspapers or magazines.

The potential audience for an internet article or news is wide and global, while the same for a print magazine is geographically limited. But not only it is such advantageous for digital ones, the capacity of self-publishing through a blog makes internet so sexy that anyone is daring to do it with no complex. And here is the risk for fake news or inaccuracy.

Online news have proven to be an easy alternative to traditional formats to a degree that new formats and platforms are just appearing every day and being nurtured as if they were no other way of communicating. Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and other applications have been straightforwardly incorporated to our lives in a manner that we have been enslaved assertively to a point that there is no return. But what’s more,

Internet makes it easier to write a page with no restriction on pieces or times a day or limitations on words, and this means a huge cost saving compared to print editions.

Younger generations are being educated and informed persistently, no matter they like it or not, simply by the fact that Internet is available in most of our homes, if not in all. One can argue that young people prefer digital formats to print formats, while older ones prefer the contrary. But this is definitely another debate that would fill hundreds of words.
