The first thing that we must consider when choosing a domain, first, before the name, is the object that will be carried out: it is not the same to start a commercial activity, than an informative or social action work.
Once the object has been defined, the purpose of our website will be to determine the domain extension where we will start looking for the appropriate name:
THE MEANING OF ITS DOMINE EXTENSION
.COM
Undoubtedly the most known and used of all domains. The extension of domain .com is an extension in which we should always register our name (especially if we are going to carry out commercial actions or information and not so much social activities). The biggest drawback of this extension is its disproportionate occupation that leaves very little room for the creation of new registers.
.NET
The .net extension is the wild card of domain names. It is the second option that is usually taken when finding the searched domain name occupied in the .COM extension. It is also registered by all those companies that own a .COM that, for a minimum cost, manage to avoid possible competition in a parallel domain that could cause them to incur image losses through duplication of references.
.ORG
Mostly used by social action organizations or selfless activities such as scientific dissemination, etc., .org domains are also usually registered by companies to avoid low cost competition in a parallel domain.
.BIZ
It is a domain used mainly by companies that already have Internet presence in extensions of conventional domains but that reinforce their corporate image. Originally .biz domains (“biz”, from bussines in English) were created to create a parallel line to .com.
.INFO
Extension chosen by webs whose maximum purpose is the dissemination of knowledge or educational content. However .info domains, because of the generic concept of “information” of its extension, are used in all areas.
.ES
Generic territorial domain of Spain currently released for registration by any person or Spanish company or that maintains links with Spain. It supposes a touch of identity for national companies and is still a good alternative to the saturated .com. The decrease in its cost has meant that Spanish companies and individuals are now beginning to adopt .es domains as the first registration option.
.COM.ES / NOM.ES / ORG.ES
Territorial domains of Spain for websites of a commercial nature (com), personal (nom) or organizations (org) of free registration and somewhat cheaper than .es. It is an alternative to the generic domain since they are less used, although the generic release has caused its use to be increasingly limited.
.EU
The .eu (European Union) domains are reserved for companies and individuals operating in the European Union environment. There are no special requirements to register them and their cost is somewhat higher than the rest of the territorial domains. It is a great option for those companies that consider developing their activity in this field or that want to give a more global character to their activity.
.CAT
The .cat (Catalunya) domains are of very recent creation and are reserved for those websites that are oriented to the dissemination and promotion of Catalan culture. There are still many limitations (as a rule the web should be made in Catalan) and they are excessively expensive. They have been limited enough to avoid, for example, being used to promote articles related to cats (“cat” in English). Based on the knowledge of domain release cycles, it is expected that in the medium term the requirements will be reduced and the cost of registration will be reduced.
TERRITORIAL EXTENSIONS
Mainly used to reinforce the presence of companies with local or international character in those countries. Also by the play of words that allow certain extensions are used to create original names that are striking and easy to retain by the user. In this case we must highlight the domains .WS (territorial domain of the Samoa Oriental Islands), but that by its analogy with “Web Site” is becoming more widespread.
———————————————————————————————————————————
Although this was its original purpose, most extensions today have no restrictions on use and can be used creatively. For example, it is common to use the extension .ws as an indicative of a website, the extension .tv for domains related to television or .be for personal domains.
There are some extensions for which certain restrictions still apply. For example: the .eu whose registration is limited to residents of the European Union and companies or organizations based therein. As well as in the .mobi and .tel that are destined to mobile devices.
